Let’s continue our series on WordPress basics and learn how to add categories in WordPress. As you may know, the category is used to indicate sections of your website and to group related posts. It is a very convenient way to organize your posts.
To access the category section you need to:
Step 1 – Click on the Posts – Categories option in the WordPress dashboard.
Step 2 – The Categories page is displayed as shown in the following screenshot.
Here is a list of explanations of what all the fields in Categories mean:
- Name – Enter the unique name of the categories.
- Slug – A word chosen to describe your post. It is specified in the tags URL.
- Parent – By selecting the parent category from the dropdown, you can set the particular category as a sub-category or can keep it as None.
- Description – Add a brief description of your category. It is optional.
Step 3 – After filling in all the information about Categories, click on the Add New Category button.
Step 4 – After clicking on Add New Category, the newly created category will be displayed on the right side of the page as shown in the following screen.
But there is another way to add a category to your WordPress website. For this, you need to create a new post or edit an existing one.
Step 1 – When in the post-editing screen, locate the Categories tab on the right side of your screen and press Add New Category.
Here you can simply add a new category and choose a parent category if needed without leaving your new post screen or if you are editing an existing one and simply don’t want to go through multiple different windows.
